]]>As we approach the festive season, accompanied by the heat of the Aussie summer Padbury Pharmacy extends its commitment to your well-being. Whilst winter illness and well-being are always at the forefront of people's minds, the significance of summer health is often overlooked. Whilst the air is filled with festive spirit, it’s easy to get swept up in the joyous atmosphere. However, as the temperature rises and social calendars fill with gatherings and outdoor activities, the need for a refined focus on summer well-being becomes paramount.
Staying Hydrated
With its scorching temperatures and vibrant social gatherings, the Australian summer brings an increased risk of dehydration. As the festivities unfold, paying attention to your body's hydration needs is crucial. Here's a deeper dive into the importance of staying hydrated and some practical tips to quench your thirst for health.
Understanding Dehydration:
Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluids than it takes in, disrupting the balance necessary for proper bodily functions. In the summer heat, this imbalance can escalate quickly, leading to fatigue, dizziness, and even more severe complications if left unaddressed. Festive season typically also means more drinking of alcoholic beverages which further dehydrates your body.
Hydralyte your Refreshing Hydration Ally:
When the sun is blazing, and you find yourself in need of a hydration boost, consider turning to Hydralyte. This trusted electrolyte solution is a game-changer, swiftly replenishing lost fluids and essential minerals.
Why Hydralyte?
Integrating Hydration into Your Routine:
Staying hydrated is not just a reactive measure; it's a proactive lifestyle choice. Incorporate these tips into your daily routine to ensure consistent hydration:Set
Hydration Reminders:
With the hustle and bustle of the festive season, it's easy to forget to drink water. Set regular reminders on your phone or make it a habit to take a sip whenever you check the time.
Infuse Your Water:
Add a burst of flavour to your water by infusing it with fruits like citrus slices, berries, or refreshing mint leaves. This can make hydration feel like a treat rather than a chore.
Carry a Reusable Water Bottle:
Having a water bottle on hand makes it convenient to sip throughout the day, whether you're at home, work, or out and about enjoying summer festivities.
Preventing Gastro, Proactive Tips for a Resilient Gut
Don't let gastro dampen your holiday spirit; instead, arm yourself with proactive strategies to safeguard your gut health. Here's an in-depth exploration of how to fortify your defences against gastro.
Hand Hygiene: A Shield Against Gastro Threats:
Regular handwashing is your frontline defence against gastro-related concerns. The hustle and bustle of social gatherings can expose you to various surfaces and potential contaminants. Make it a habit to wash your hands thoroughly, especially before indulging in any culinary delights or taking charge in the kitchen. This simple yet effective practice significantly reduces the risk of ingesting harmful bacteria.
Mastering Food Storage and Preparation: Your Gastro-Free Kitchen Zone:
The festive season often involves an abundance of food, and proper storage and preparation are paramount to prevent gastro outbreaks. Exercise caution by ensuring that perishable foods are stored at safe temperatures. Refrigerate leftovers promptly and avoid leaving dishes out for extended periods during gatherings. These measures contribute to creating a gastro-free kitchen zone, reducing the likelihood of foodborne illnesses.
Recognising Gastro Symptoms:
Being vigilant about gastro symptoms is crucial for early intervention. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea are telltale signs that shouldn't be ignored. If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, seeking prompt medical attention is essential. Padbury Pharmacy is your reliable partner in this scenario, offering not only treatments but also expert advice for the effective management of gastro-related concerns.
Tailored treatments for gastro symptoms:
At Padbury Pharmacy, we understand the disruptive nature of gastro and its potential impact on your festive season.
While the festive season brings joy and merriment, it's essential to be proactive in safeguarding your gut health. By prioritising hand hygiene, mastering food storage and preparation, and recognising gastro symptoms early on, you empower yourself to enjoy the festivities with peace of mind. Remember, Padbury Pharmacy is here to support you on your journey to a gastro-free celebration!
As you revel in the joys of the festive season, which may include soaking up the glorious Australian sunshine, safeguarding your skin becomes paramount. Embrace sun safety practices to ensure your skin remains healthy and radiant throughout the season.
Sunscreen: Protect Your Skin Against Harmful Rays:
The Aussie sun can be unforgiving, making sunscreen your steadfast ally in the quest for sun safety. Opt for a high-SPF sunscreen to create a robust barrier against UV rays. Remember, the diligent application is key – reapply every two hours, or more frequently if you've been swimming or perspiring. With a variety of sunscreen options available at Padbury Pharmacy, you can choose formulations that suit your skin type and preferences.
Shade-Seeking Strategies:
Take proactive measures to seek shade during the hottest segments of the day, typically spanning from 10 am to 4 pm. This simple yet effective step shields you from the intense rays, contributing to your overall sun safety. Whether enjoying a leisurely afternoon picnic or engaging in outdoor festivities, incorporating shade into your plans is a wise choice.
Wardrobe Choices: Adding a Layer to Your UV Protection:
Your wardrobe can be your best protection against the sun's harmful rays so opting for clothing choices that cover your skin like long sleeves can be a wise choice. Kaftans and shirts in cooling fabrics like linen are ideal in the summer. Hats are also a wise choice, particularly those with wide brims that not only cover your face but also your ears and the back of your neck.
Heatstroke Awareness:
While basking in the sun, it's crucial to be attuned to the signs of heatstroke. High body temperature, confusion, and rapid breathing are indicators that should not be overlooked. If you or someone in your company exhibits these symptoms, swift action is imperative. Seek medical attention immediately and move to a cooler place to address the potential risks of heatstroke.
Holiday Health: Prioritising Wellness on Your Festive Getaway
Many Australians seize the opportunity to embark on overseas adventures, creating unforgettable holiday memories. Padbury Pharmacy stands as your reliable partner in crafting a blueprint for wellness during your festive getaway.

Maintaining continuity in your health routine while abroad is essential. Before departure, ensure you have an ample supply of your regular medications. Consulting with our pharmacists at Padbury Pharmacy ensures you are well-informed about the storage and administration of your medications, fostering peace of mind throughout your holiday.
Hydration and Culinary Caution:
Navigating different hygiene standards is part and parcel of international travel. Opt for bottled water as your primary hydration source, mitigating the risk of waterborne illnesses. When indulging in local cuisine, exercise caution by choosing well-cooked meals from reputable restaurants.
Health Kit Essentials:
Preparedness is a cornerstone of a healthy holiday. Packing a basic health kit equips you to address minor health concerns promptly. Include essentials such as band-aids for minor cuts, antiseptic for wound care, and rehydration sachets to combat dehydration. Padbury Pharmacy can assist you in assembling a personalised health kit tailored to your specific travel needs.
Exploring Nature for Mental Well-being
Whilst this time of year can often be seen as particularly positive, that’s not always the case for everyone. The chaos of Christmas and the pressures of social interactions can oftentimes be difficult. That is why it is important to prioritise your mental health during this period.
Getting outdoors:
Delving into the great outdoors offers a powerful remedy for enhancing mental health. Whether it's a stroll through a tranquil park, a relaxing day at the beach, or an invigorating hike in the mountains, connecting with nature has been scientifically linked to reducing stress and fostering an improved mood. Nature serves as a therapeutic sanctuary, providing a welcome escape from the daily grind and creating an environment conducive to relaxation and mental rejuvenation.
Harnessing Sunlight for Mood Enhancement:
Sunlight exposure plays a crucial role in the body's vitamin D production, a key factor in mood regulation. Soaking in the sun's rays can elevate your spirits and contribute to an overall sense of well-being. However, it's essential to strike a balance and adopt sun safety practices. While sunlight brings its mood-boosting benefits, prolonged exposure during peak hours can lead to skin damage. Practising moderation and incorporating sun safety measures, such as sunscreen and seeking shade, ensures a healthy equilibrium between enjoying the mood-enhancing effects of sunlight and protecting your skin. By responsibly immersing yourself in the outdoors, you can tap into the positive influences of nature and sunlight, nurturing your mental health along the way.

]]>Breast Cancer in Men: The Overlooked Reality
Breast cancer in men is rare but very real. According to statistics, about 1% of all breast cancer cases occur in men. Due to the lack of awareness, the diagnosis is often delayed, leading to more advanced stages of the disease by the time it is detected.
One of the primary reasons for this oversight is the widespread misconception that men do not have breast tissue. The truth is, both men and women have breast tissue, though men have lower amounts. This makes them susceptible to the same breast problems that women face, including breast cancer.
Recognising the Signs
For both men and women, self-awareness is key. “I felt a lump,” is a common phrase for those who have had a breast cancer diagnosis, but there are many other symptoms or warning signs to watch for:
Most breast changes are not likely to be breast cancer. However, if you find a change in your breast that’s unusual for you, see your doctor without delay for assessment.
Breast Self-Exams: A Life-saving Routine
Everyone’s breasts look and feel different. Become familiar with the normal look and feel of your breasts. There’s no right or wrong way to check your breasts for any changes. Try to get used to looking at and feeling your breasts regularly. You can do this in the bath or shower, when you use body lotion or when you get dressed.
Remember to check all parts of your breast, your armpits and up to your collarbone. When you check your breasts, try to be aware of any changes that are different for you.
Breast self-exams (BSE) are an essential tool for early detection. By regularly examining your breast tissue, you become familiar with what's normal for you and can quickly recognise any changes.
For Women: The best time to do a BSE is a few days after your period ends when your breasts are less tender. Stand in front of a mirror with your hands on your hips and inspect your breasts for any visible changes. Raise your arms and look for any changes in contour or shape. Finally, feel your breasts while lying down, using your right hand to feel your left breast and vice versa.
For Men: While there isn’t a specific best time, making it a monthly routine is beneficial. In front of a mirror, inspect your chest area for any visible lumps or changes. Using the pads of your fingers, press down and move in small circular motions around your chest area, ensuring you cover all the tissue.
The Importance of Screening
If you notice any abnormalities during your self-exams or have a family history of breast cancer, speak to your healthcare provider. They may recommend further screenings like mammograms or ultrasounds, even for men.
Regular screenings are particularly essential for those with risk factors, such as family history, exposure to radiation, or inherited gene mutations like BRCA1 and BRCA2.
Wrapping Up
Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate based on gender. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s debunk myths, create awareness, and champion the importance of self-exams and screenings for everyone. Early detection can mean the difference between life and death. Let’s take charge of our health, together.
Stay informed and proactive. Your health matters to us at Padbury Pharmacy.
]]>Risk Factors for Strokes:
While certain factors like age and family history are beyond our control, there are numerous risk factors that we can actively manage to reduce the likelihood of experiencing a stroke. By identifying these risk factors and taking proactive steps, we can prioritise our health and well-being. Below, are the non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors associated with strokes:
Non-Modifiable Risk Factors:
Modifiable Risk Factors:
Prevention Strategies for Strokes
The FAST Acronym: To aid in recognising stroke symptoms quickly, the FAST acronym is a helpful tool:
F - Face Drooping: One side of the face droops or feels numb when the person smiles.
A - Arm Weakness: One arm becomes weak or numb and may drift downward when raised.
S - Speech Difficulty: Speech may become slurred or difficult to understand.
T - Time to Call Emergency: If any of these symptoms are present, it's essential to call emergency services immediately.
Note the Time: Take note of when the symptoms started, as this information is vital for determining the most appropriate treatment options.
Some treatments that may be used include clot-busting medications - If the stroke is ischemic (caused by a blood clot), certain medications, such as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), may be administered intravenously to dissolve the clot and restore blood flow to the brain.
Endovascular procedures are used In some cases. Interventional procedures may be performed to remove the clot or restore blood flow. This may involve the use of catheters, stents, or mechanical devices.
Rehabilitation and Recovery:
After the acute phase of treatment, stroke survivors often require rehabilitation to regain lost abilities and maximise independence. Rehabilitation may involve physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and other specialised programs tailored to individual needs. Support from healthcare professionals, family, and friends plays a vital role in the recovery process.
Strokes can have devastating effects on individuals and their families, but the majority of strokes can be prevented through awareness, lifestyle modifications, and proper management of risk factors. By understanding the causes, recognising the risk factors, and adopting healthy habits, we can significantly reduce the likelihood of experiencing a stroke. Let us take control of our health and prioritise prevention to safeguard our well-being and enjoy a life free from the threat of strokes.
Remember, the information provided in this blog post is for educational purposes only. If you or someone you know experiences stroke symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
]]>Understanding 60-Day Dispensing: A Double-Edged Sword
The introduction of 60-day dispensing involves pharmacists being required to dispense double the amount of medicines to some patients for a single dispensing fee. While this may seem like a beneficial measure for certain individuals who require extended medication supplies, it carries far-reaching consequences for local pharmacies. A significant portion of a pharmacy's income is derived from the dispensing fee they receive from the government, which helps sustain their operations and provides crucial resources to better serve their communities.
Government's Decision: Implications for Community Pharmacies
The introduction of 60-day dispensing poses severe challenges for community pharmacies, potentially jeopardising their ability to continue offering the comprehensive services that their patients rely on. With the government reducing remuneration for dispensing, pharmacies may face financial constraints, leading to cutbacks in opening hours, staff reductions, and, in some cases, even closures. These projections indicate that the implementation of 60-day dispensing could result in 20,818 job losses, 665 pharmacy closures, and an overall decline in the accessibility of vital healthcare services.
The Heart of Local Pharmacies: Going Beyond Dispensing
Local pharmacies serve as healthcare hubs, where patients can receive personalised care and guidance beyond just medication dispensing. From blood pressure checks and diabetes management to medication counselling and after-hours advice, local pharmacies play an indispensable role in supporting the health and well-being of their communities. Additionally, many local pharmacies offer essential services, such as medicine delivery to the elderly or housebound individuals, baby weighing, and wellness clinics. The impact of these services reaches far beyond physical health; they foster a sense of community and genuine care that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
Disproportionate Impact on Vulnerable Communities
The fallout of 60-day dispensing is expected to disproportionately affect specific segments of the population, particularly those living in regional and remote areas. For individuals residing in these areas, local pharmacies are often the primary access point to healthcare services, as other medical facilities may be distant or limited. The elderly, who heavily rely on community pharmacies for medication management and health advice, are also at risk of being disproportionately affected. Furthermore, families with young children, seeking convenience and personalised care, could face challenges in accessing essential healthcare services if their local pharmacy faces closure or cutbacks.
The Call to Action: Supporting Your Local Pharmacy:
As patients and members of vibrant communities, the importance of supporting our local pharmacies cannot be overstated. These cornerstones of health and well-being play a pivotal role in ensuring accessible and personalised healthcare services for everyone they serve. In times of change and uncertainty, our support becomes a beacon of hope, reminding local pharmacies that their contributions are not only valued but also indispensable to the fabric of our communities.
As we choose to patronise our local pharmacies, we take a direct and impactful step towards sustaining these invaluable institutions. Our actions directly influence their financial viability, allowing them to continue offering the diverse range of services and support that makes them so vital. By supporting local pharmacies, we actively contribute to their ability to provide essential care, keep their doors open during after-hours and weekends, and maintain a strong presence in our neighbourhoods.
Local pharmacists often build enduring relationships with their customers, going beyond simply dispensing medications. They become trusted healthcare advisors, confidants, and sources of comfort during times of illness or uncertainty. By choosing to rely on local pharmacies, we invest in these relationships, ensuring that the human touch and personalised care remain at the core of our healthcare experiences.
Moreover, supporting local pharmacies signifies our commitment to preserving the character and identity of our communities. Each local pharmacy reflects the unique spirit of its surroundings, becoming an integral part of the tapestry that defines our neighbourhoods. By standing by our local pharmacies, we safeguard the diversity and richness of our communities, celebrating the shared values that make them special.
Our support for local pharmacies holds profound significance in the fabric of our vibrant communities. By amplifying our voices in advocacy, choosing to patronise these invaluable institutions, and fostering lasting connections, we ensure their sustainability as vital healthcare resources.
Local pharmacies stand at the heart of communities, offering indispensable healthcare services, support, and care. The government's decision to introduce 60-day dispensing carries significant implications for the viability of local pharmacies and the accessibility of essential healthcare services. It is incumbent upon us, as patients and community members, to rally behind our local pharmacies, recognising their crucial contributions and advocating for their continued support. Together, we can navigate the challenges posed by 60-day dispensing, preserving the essence of community pharmacies as pillars of strength and compassion in the healthcare landscape.
Together, let us stand united in preserving the essence of community pharmacies as beacons of health, compassion, and strength in our ever-changing healthcare landscape.

The Benefits of Eliminating or Reducing Alcohol Consumption:
Embarking on the journey of abstaining from alcohol can lead to a plethora of health benefits, ranging from improved liver function to better sleep quality and enhanced mental clarity. By making a conscious decision to reduce or avoid alcohol intake you create space for healthier lifestyle choices that can positively impact your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Health Benefits of Abstaining from Alcohol:
Improved Liver Health:
Taking a break from alcohol and giving your liver a much-needed respite can have a profound impact on your overall liver health. Chronic alcohol consumption can lead to liver damage, such as fatty liver and cirrhosis, which compromises its ability to function efficiently. By abstaining, you provide your liver with the opportunity to regenerate and heal, reducing the risk of developing these serious liver conditions. A healthy liver is essential for proper digestion, detoxification, and nutrient absorption, contributing to your overall well-being and vitality.
Enhanced Sleep Quality:
When it comes to getting a good night's rest, alcohol can be a significant disruptor. While it may initially induce drowsiness, alcohol interferes with the normal sleep cycle, resulting in fragmented and shallow sleep. As you steer clear of alcohol, you'll likely notice a marked improvement in your sleep quality. Embracing alcohol-free nights allows your body to establish a healthier sleep pattern, leading to more restorative and uninterrupted sleep. Waking up feeling refreshed and invigorated becomes the norm, helping you approach each day with a renewed sense of energy and focus.
Sharper Mental Clarity:
Alcohol's influence on cognitive function can impact various aspects of your mental sharpness. From decision-making to memory retention, alcohol's effects may lead to impaired judgment and reduced mental clarity. By choosing to abstain from alcohol, you allow your brain to function optimally. Experience the benefits of enhanced mental clarity, improved focus, and a sharper mind, empowering you to excel in work, relationships, and daily tasks with greater precision and confidence.
Supportive Weight Management:
If you're conscious of your weight and wellness goals, alcohol may be a sneaky hindrance. Alcoholic beverages are often high in calories and can contribute to weight gain, especially when consumed regularly. Opting to avoid alcohol can be a game-changer in your weight management journey. By cutting out these empty calories, you create room for more nutritious choices, enabling you to maintain a healthier weight and cultivate a positive relationship with your body and food.
Better Hydration:
Dehydration is a common side effect of alcohol consumption, as it prompts your body to lose more fluids than it takes in. Over time, chronic dehydration can lead to various imbalances in your body, affecting everything from your skin's appearance to your organ function. Abstaining from alcohol allows you to maintain better hydration levels, supporting your bodily processes and promoting optimal health. Your skin may feel more supple, and you'll likely notice an improvement in overall bodily functions as you stay hydrated throughout the day.
Strengthened Immune System:
Your immune system plays a pivotal role in protecting your body from infections and illnesses. However, alcohol can weaken this defence mechanism, making you more vulnerable to various health challenges. By abstaining from alcohol, you provide your immune system with the boost it needs to function at its best. Strengthening your immune system can reduce the likelihood of falling sick and enhance your body's ability to ward off common ailments, allowing you to enjoy better overall health and well-being.
In conclusion, embracing the practice of abstaining from alcohol brings a multitude of benefits that extend far beyond a single month or initiative. While participating in Dry July is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness and contribute to the McGrath Foundation's noble cause, the journey of giving up alcohol offers lasting rewards for your overall health and well-being. Remember that every choice you make in favour of your health is an investment in your future. Whether it's a month-long commitment or a lifelong decision, prioritising your well-being sets the stage for a brighter and healthier you.
We at Padbury Pharmacy stand alongside you on this journey, offering our support and care throughout. As you make mindful choices for your health, know that you are part of a caring community that values your well-being. Together, we can celebrate the positive impact of making healthier choices, and supporting each other in the pursuit of a healthier, happier, and more fulfilling life.
]]>The Importance of Flu Vaccinations:
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can cause mild to severe symptoms. It can lead to hospitalisations, complications, and even fatalities, particularly in vulnerable populations. Flu vaccinations are the most effective means of prevention.
The McGowan Government's initiative to provide free flu vaccinations for all West Australians is a significant step toward ensuring widespread protection. By availing yourself of this opportunity, you not only safeguard your health but also contribute to the overall well-being of our community.
Why You Should Get Vaccinated this June:
1. Protecting Vulnerable Populations:
The influenza virus can have severe consequences, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems or underlying health conditions. By getting vaccinated through the free flu shot initiative, you actively contribute to safeguarding these at-risk individuals, helping to reduce the spread of the flu and its potential impact on their health.
2. Public Health Impact:
The provision of free flu shots plays a crucial role in strengthening public health. When more people in the community receive the vaccine, the overall immunity level increases, creating what is known as "herd immunity." This protective barrier helps shield those who are unable to receive the vaccine, further reducing the risk of flu outbreaks and related complications. By taking advantage of the free incentive, you actively participate in promoting a healthier and safer environment for everyone.
3. Financial Accessibility:
The cost of vaccines can sometimes be a deterrent for individuals to prioritise their health, especially for those facing financial challenges. The free flu shot initiative removes this financial burden, ensuring that everyone has equal access to preventive care. By availing yourself of this opportunity, you not only protect yourself but also take an important step toward reducing health disparities and promoting health equity within the community.
What is Flu Vax:
At Padbury Pharmacy, we offer Flu Vax, a premium flu shot designed to provide enhanced protection against influenza. Developed by trusted pharmaceutical company Seqirus, Flu Vax is a quadrivalent vaccine that targets four key strains of the virus, offering broader coverage compared to standard flu vaccines. Its advanced formulation is based on cell culture technology, ensuring optimal efficacy and safety.
Benefits of Choosing Flu Vax:
Enhanced Protection: The inclusion of four flu strains in Flu Vax increases your defense against the circulating viruses, reducing the risk of infection and its associated complications.
1. Long-lasting Immunity: Flu Vax stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies that provide immunity against the targeted strains. This immunity lasts throughout the flu season, ensuring continuous protection.
2. Safe and Trusted: Seqirus is a reputable pharmaceutical company committed to delivering high-quality vaccines. Flu Vax undergoes rigorous testing and adheres to stringent safety standards to ensure its effectiveness and reliability.
3. Convenient Administration: At Padbury Pharmacy, our trained healthcare professionals administer Flu Vax with precision and care. You can rest assured that you are receiving your vaccination from knowledgeable experts dedicated to your well-being.
How You Can Protect Your Friends and Family:
Protecting your friends and family from the flu begins with taking proactive measures to reduce the risk of infection and transmission. Encourage everyone in your household to follow these essential preventive steps:
Get Vaccinated: Flu vaccinations are the most effective means of preventing the spread of the virus. By getting vaccinated, you not only protect yourself but also reduce the risk of spreading the flu to others, including those who may be more susceptible to severe illness.
Practice Good Hygiene: Regularly wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing, or being in public places. Use hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available. Avoid touching your face, as the virus can enter your body through your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Cover Your Mouth and Nose: When coughing or sneezing, use a tissue or your elbow to cover your mouth and nose. Dispose of used tissues properly and wash your hands immediately afterwards.
Avoid Close Contact: Minimise close contact with individuals who are sick, and if you develop flu-like symptoms, stay home to prevent the spread of the virus to others.
Partnering with Padbury Pharmacy:
When you choose Padbury Pharmacy for your flu vaccination needs, you gain more than just a premium vaccine. Our experienced team of pharmacists and healthcare providers is dedicated to delivering exceptional service and personalised care. ]]>Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the central nervous system, specifically the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. MS occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective layer (myelin) that surrounds nerve fibres, leading to inflammation and damage to the nerve fibres themselves. This damage can cause a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, muscle weakness and spasticity, vision problems, and cognitive difficulties.
MS is a progressive disease, meaning symptoms usually worsen over time, and there is currently no cure. However, treatment options are available to help manage symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex and unpredictable disease that can have a significant impact on a person's quality of life. Managing symptoms and adapting to the challenges of the disease can be a daunting task, requiring both physical and emotional resilience. At Padbury Pharmacy, we understand the unique needs of those living with MS and are committed to providing expert advice and support to help individuals live well with this condition.
Here are some strategies and resources for managing symptoms and improving quality of life with MS. From symptom management to lifestyle modifications, we'll explore various approaches that have been shown to be effective in helping individuals with MS manage their symptoms and maintain their overall health and wellbeing. Whether you are newly diagnosed or have been living with MS for a while, our goal is to provide you with practical tools and support to help you thrive with this condition.
Symptom Management
One of the primary approaches to symptom management in MS is medication. There are different types of medications available, depending on the specific symptoms experienced. For example, disease-modifying therapies can help slow down the progression of MS and reduce relapses. Symptom-specific medications, such as muscle relaxants for spasticity or pain medications for neuropathic pain, may also be prescribed. It is essential to work closely with healthcare professionals to find the right medications and dosages that work best for each individual.
Physio & Rehab:
Physical therapy and rehabilitation play a significant role in managing MS symptoms. Physical therapists can design exercise programs tailored to address specific issues like balance, gait problems, muscle weakness, and fatigue. They can also provide strategies for managing mobility challenges and preventing falls. Occupational therapists can help individuals adapt to their environment and develop techniques to maintain independence in daily activities. Speech therapy may be beneficial for those experiencing speech or swallowing difficulties.
Lifestyle:
Fatigue is a common symptom of MS, and managing energy levels is crucial. Individuals with MS should learn to prioritise tasks, pace themselves, and take regular breaks to conserve energy. Engaging in relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga, can help reduce stress and promote better sleep quality.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can have a positive impact on managing MS symptoms. A balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, can support overall health. Adequate hydration is also important, as it can help manage fatigue and prevent bladder-related issues. Regular exercise, as tolerated, can help improve strength, balance, and mood.
Brain & Mind:
Cognitive symptoms, such as memory problems or difficulties with attention and concentration, can be managed through cognitive rehabilitation techniques. These may include memory exercises, problem-solving activities, and strategies to enhance cognitive function. Additionally, using calendars, reminders, and assistive technologies can help compensate for cognitive challenges.
Psychological support is essential for individuals with MS, as it can help manage the emotional impact of the condition. Support groups or counselling can provide a safe space to share experiences, receive encouragement, and learn coping strategies. Engaging in hobbies, practising relaxation techniques, and maintaining social connections can also contribute to emotional well-being.
Considering the emotional and psychological impact of MS is essential, though can be overlooked as tackling the physical aspects of the disease tends to be front of mind. Engaging in regular self-care practices, seeking counselling or therapy, and joining support groups can provide emotional support and help navigate the challenges that may arise. It is important to acknowledge and address the potential emotional impact of MS and develop coping strategies to maintain mental well-being.
Your Support Network:
Consideration should also be given to establishing a reliable support network. This can include identifying family members, friends, or caregivers who can provide assistance and support as needed, in the long term. For individuals without an available support system, it may be beneficial to explore community resources, support groups, or organisations that offer assistance and guidance for individuals living with MS.
Planning for the Future: MS and Long-Term Care Considerations
Planning for the future is an important aspect of managing multiple sclerosis, especially when considering long-term care needs. While MS can vary widely in terms of progression and severity, it is prudent for individuals with MS and their families to consider the potential impact of the disease on their daily lives and make appropriate preparations.
Planning for mobility needs is a crucial aspect of future planning. As MS progresses, mobility challenges can arise, making it necessary to adapt living spaces to accommodate changing needs. This might involve modifications to the home, such as installing ramps or grab bars, to improve accessibility and safety. Additionally, researching and exploring assistive devices like wheelchairs, walkers, or mobility scooters can help maintain independence and enhance mobility. With modifications to the home and new assistive devices comes the additional financial burden, on top of expensive medications and treatments. Financial management is another big consideration in future planning.
In conclusion, there are a variety of lifestyle modifications and other changes that MS patients can make to help manage their symptoms and improve their overall quality of life. Maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, managing stress levels, working with an occupational therapist, and seeking social support can all be helpful strategies. Managing medications is also a helpful way to help patients feel their best. It's important for MS patients to work with their healthcare providers, and us at Padbury Pharmacy to develop a personalised plan for managing their symptoms and improving their quality of life. With the right combination of lifestyle modifications and other strategies, MS patients can lead full and fulfilling lives, which is our number one priority.

]]>As a new mother, there's nothing quite as rewarding as watching your little one grow and thrive. And for many mothers, breastfeeding is a natural and essential way of nourishing your newborn baby that offers a myriad of crucial health benefits. The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) recommends new mothers exclusively breastfeed their babies for the first six months of life. While this can be a beautiful bonding experience between mother and child, it can also be a daunting task - especially for new mothers who may struggle to produce enough milk. It’s not surprising then that difficulty with lactation is one of the most commonly cited reasons for new mums stopping breastfeeding before the 6-month mark.
We understand you may feel isolated and frustrated, feeling like you’re not able to provide for your baby in the way you hoped. But, we’re here to remind you that you’re not alone. Many mothers struggle with lactation post-baby, and it’s important to remember that this experience is completely normal and not a reflection of your abilities as a mother. There are many resources and products available to help you overcome this difficult period and even boost milk production.
Lactation is the process of producing and secreting breast milk from a woman's mammary glands to feed her baby. Breast milk is like a superfood for babies, containing all the necessary nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to support their growth and development. It's even been called "liquid gold" because it contains antibodies and immune factors that help protect babies from infections and diseases. That's right, breast milk is not just food, but also a natural medicine that can help keep babies healthy and thriving.
But the benefits of lactation don't stop with babies. Breastfeeding is also incredibly beneficial for mothers. It helps reduce the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. It also promotes postpartum weight loss and can help mothers recover more quickly from childbirth. Not to mention, the bonding and emotional connection between mother and baby that breastfeeding facilitates is priceless.
While there’s no magic potion to drastically increase your breast milk supply, there are certain lactogenic foods and herbs linked to breast milk production that may help support the quality and quantity of your lactation. Here are some examples:
Oatmeal: Oats are rich in iron and can help to increase milk supply.
Fenugreek: Fenugreek seeds contain compounds that can stimulate milk production.
Fennel: Fennel seeds contain phytoestrogens that can help to increase milk production.
Brewer's yeast: Brewer's yeast is a good source of B vitamins and can help to increase milk production.
Alfalfa: Alfalfa is a nutrient-rich herb that can help to increase milk production.
Garlic: Garlic is a natural galactagogue, meaning it can help to increase milk production.
Ginger: Ginger can help to boost lactation and alleviate nausea in breastfeeding mothers.
At Padbury Pharmacy, we’re thrilled to now stock Milk & Cookies by Jewels - an Aussie-based brand offering a nutritious snack designed to help support breastfeeding mothers boost their lactation. Not only are these cookies the ultimate comfort food (we love that you can eat them warm), they are made with natural ingredients such as oats, deactivated yeast, and flaxseed, which have been shown to help increase milk production in lactating mothers. By offering a tasty and convenient way to support lactation (even for busy mothers on the go), Milk & Cookies by Jewels can help breastfeeding mothers feel more confident and comfortable in their breastfeeding journey. So if you're a new mother or know someone who is, we encourage you to stop by the clinic and ask one of our staff members about our Milk & Cookies by Jewels products to see how these yummy cookies can aid breast milk supply.
We offer a range of cookie flavours at our clinic - all of which are free from preservatives, artificial colours and flavours - including choc chip, white choc and macadamia, and double choc cherry to suit a variety of cravings.
Please note that while these products can help promote lactation, it's crucial that mums maintain a healthy and balanced diet, stay hydrated, and ensure adequate rest and relaxation to support their milk supply. If you are a mother struggling with breastfeeding your bub, we encourage you to consult with one of our lactation consultants.
Breastfeeding can be a challenging and emotional journey for many new mothers. At Padbury Pharmacy, we understand that support and guidance are crucial for success, which is why we offer services with International Board Certified Lactation Consultants and Midwives (IBCLC) from Bundle and Me at our clinic.
Our lactation consultants specialise in all aspects of breastfeeding, from optimising position to achieve a pain-free latch to addressing more complex issues such as tongue ties, colic, low supply, and blocked ducts/mastitis. But they do more than just address the physical aspects of breastfeeding. They recognise the emotional and psychological factors that can affect breastfeeding success and work closely with mothers to provide personalised care for their unique needs and circumstances.
At Padbury Pharmacy, mums can expect a comfortable and supportive environment for their lactation consult with empathy, compassion, and non-judgmental guidance.
Breastfeeding is an incredible journey that starts at birth, but despite the high number of mothers who initiate breastfeeding, only a fraction continue to breastfeed beyond the first few months. It's not their fault - without the right support and education, it can be a challenging road to navigate.
As a community pharmacy, we're committed to helping the mothers and babies of Padbury on their breastfeeding journey. Whether you're a new mum or an experienced one, we tailor our support to your unique needs. If you're struggling with breastfeeding, remember, you're not alone! We encourage you to reach out to our clinic and seek help, and we'll do our best to ensure you and baby are thriving.
]]>Fortunately, organisations like Heart Research Australia are working hard to combat this disease through their RED FEB campaign. RED FEB is an awareness and fundraising initiative that encourages people to wear red throughout the month of February and donate to support critical research into heart disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The ultimate aim is to lessen the impact of heart disease on families and communities while advancing breakthroughs in the battle against this illness.
While heart disease is still the primary cause of death in Australia, the good news is that up to 80% of premature cases of heart disease and stroke can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, we are thrilled to share cardiologist Dr Edward Barin's 4-M approach to heart health, a simple yet effective set of tips that can be implemented regardless of age. Remember, it is never too late to start taking care of your heart!
1. Move
Exercise is crucial for overall health, including heart health. It helps strengthen your immune system, lessens the risk of blood clots, enhances brain function, and lowers blood pressure. Regular cardio exercise can help the heart with improved blood flow, reducing the risk of a heart attack. Exercise improves heart muscle efficiency, circulation, muscle strength and flexibility. This happens because exercise enhances the muscles' capability to extract oxygen from the blood, lessening the heart's workload.
So you might be wondering how you can easily incorporate exercise into your busy life. Here are some simple ways for both young and elderly people to incorporate exercise into their life:
Choose a workout that you like and stick to it. Try getting family and friends involved to make it more enjoyable.
Eating mindfully and making healthy food choices can have a significant impact on your overall heart health. Maintaining healthy cholesterol levels is necessary.
Cholesterol is a type of lipid (fat) found in your blood. It is produced by your liver and is also obtained from foods. It is necessary for hormone production and cell membrane formation, but too much can lead to heart disease by building up in blood vessels. There are two types of cholesterol: low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, often referred to as "bad" cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, often referred to as "good" cholesterol.
To maintain healthy cholesterol levels, it is recommended to reduce or avoid the following foods
To maintain healthy cholesterol levels, it is recommended to increase intake of the following foods:
Eating a balanced meal and reducing the number of unhealthy fats, salt, and processed foods in your diet can help to promote heart health. Visit your doctor for more information on heart health and meals.
Staying on top of your heart health requires tracking key metrics and monitoring progress over time. Key indicators to track include cholesterol levels, blood pressure, weight, sugar levels, waist circumference, and exercise capacity. Regular monitoring of these metrics can provide insight into your overall health and help identify any changes that may need further attention. Early detection and management can prevent life-threatening heart problems.
High blood pressure can strain the heart and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. A high blood pressure reading indicates the heart is working harder than necessary to pump blood, which can damage blood vessels over time. Visit Padbury pharmacy for a free blood pressure check by our professional and friendly staff to help monitor and manage high blood pressure.
The frequency of heart health checks varies based on age, risk factors, and overall health. It's recommended to have a heart health check at least once a year, or more frequently if recommended by a doctor.
Maintaining a positive outlook and managing stress can have a significant impact on heart health. Research has shown that negative emotions such as stress, anger, and depression can increase the risk of heart disease and contribute to poor cardiovascular health.
On the other hand, a positive state of mind, supportive relationships, and overall happiness can play a protective role in reducing the risk of heart problems. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health.
It's important to prioritise self-care and create a healthy work-life balance. Engage in activities that bring you joy, stay connected with loved ones, and don't hesitate to reach out for support if needed. Making time for rest and sleep can also have a positive impact on your mental well-being.
Prioritising mental health can not only improve your overall well-being but also help reduce the risk of heart disease and promote a healthy heart.
Follow these tips for a healthier heart and support RED FEB this February by simply wearing red and donating to Heart Research Australia which will help fund life-saving breakthroughs for people across Australia. Wearing red and participating in activities you love, such as running, walking, or cooking will raise awareness and funds for heart disease research.
Share your RED on social media using the hashtags #wearredanddonate, #REDFEB, #HROz, #researchsaveslives, and #heartdiseaseawareness.
To get involved and make a difference, visit https://www.heartresearch.com.au/redfeb/ for more information or to make a donation. Let's work together to raise awareness and support a healthy heart!

Here are our 5 tips to help make the return to school smoother for you and your child:
1. Plan Healthy Lunches
We all know how vital healthy and balanced meals are for children, but isn’t it a struggle thinking of and preparing a fun healthy meal every single day? Take the stress off by preparing a list of lunch box ideas in advance. Ahead of the week, discuss with your child, and jot down a list of meals and snacks for the entire week. Allowing older children to choose their meals and taking them food shopping can be a great bonding experience and you can encourage them to make healthy balanced choices. Keep track of what they are eating and what they aren’t quite enjoying.
Packing a healthy lunch does not have to be so difficult. Children like variety and often get bored so switch it up between these main food groups to ensure a healthy yet fun meal is nourishing your child. We recommend each of the following to be part of your child's meal:
2. Keep Your Kid’s Sun Smart
Whether it's sweltering hot or it’s cool and breezy, it is important to teach your child to protect themselves against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. The primary cause of skin cancer is UV exposure from the sun, which can still be present on cool or cloudy days. Sunburn, premature ageing and eye damage are all accelerated by prolonged sun exposure. Thankfully, staying sun-smart and following simple tips can significantly reduce the negative impacts of sun exposure.
Using child-friendly sunscreen every day is essential to protect your child from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Add sunscreen application to the busy morning routine and make it a habit for your child. Applying sunscreen liberally in front of your children can be a good way to encourage them to learn this habit. Reapplying sunscreen before lunch breaks or outdoor activities should also be encouraged.
However, that can be easier said than done. We understand that children can be picky when choosing sunscreen or stubborn and skip sunscreen application altogether with complaints of it being sticky and greasy, or smelling bad. At Padbury Pharmacy, we have a stock a range of sunscreens including child-friendly, non-greasy options. Come down to find the perfect sunscreen for your child that they would happily wear every single day.
Other tips to teach your child to stay sun smart include wearing hats or light long-sleeve shirts when they are playing outdoors. Teach your child to seek shade when possible as it reduces exposure to UV radiation by about 75%. You can still play chasey in the shade!
3. Allergy and Asthma Preparation
The unfortunate truth is many kids struggle with asthma or allergies that can make going back to school a bit harder for both you and your child. Around 8% of children in Australia face food allergies with the most common being peanuts, tree nuts and shellfish. When triggered, these allergies can cause severe reactions or anaphylaxis which can be life-threatening. Asthma is a common respiratory condition characterised by chronic inflammation of the airways which affects 10% of children in Australia and can be triggered by factors such as physical exercise, weather conditions or pollen. With asthma and allergy so prevalent in children, it is important to ensure you take some simple steps to make the transition back to school easier and safer. The following tips and reminders can ease your worries:
Visit Padbury Pharmacy for allergy and asthma services or to have a chat with our friendly team for any advice on children's allergies.
4. After School Activities
Physical activity is so important to support your child’s physical and mental health whilst also enabling them to improve their social skills and form friendships with other children. Encouraging your child to simply move or be active for about an hour is important as it helps develop healthy bones, muscles and joints. Exercise will also strengthen children's coordination and muscle control whilst also making them more flexible and improving their posture.
You could enrol your child in activities such as swimming, gymnastics or their preferred sport. Discussing which activities your child would enjoy is a great place to start. This will also facilitate social interactions with other children which may result in great friendships. Other budget-friendly ways to get your child to engage in physical activity includes playing a sport such as football or cricket in your nearby playground or park, and investigating local community groups. Other activities could be riding a bike, playing outdoor games. Engaging in such physical activities with your child can also be a great bonding activity.
5. Look After Yourselves as Parents
In the midst of caring for your child and getting busy with preparing everything for back to school, as parents you may sometimes lose sight of yourself. This is your kind reminder to look after yourself too during this time, and maybe try some of the following tips:
The new school year can bring on a range of emotions, from excitement to uneasiness for both you and your child. It's important to take care of your and your kids, physical and mental health to ensure a successful school year. We hope these tips helped you feel more prepared for the upcoming school year, but if you have any questions or concerns about your health, don't hesitate to reach out to our friendly staff at Padbury Pharmacy. The holiday season is prime time for feasting with family and friends. With a true abundance of good food, you need to be careful you aren’t indulging too much. Overeating or eating too quickly can often lead to negative health effects such as indigestion, acid reflux and heavy bloating which can quickly ruin your Christmas lunch plans.
Here are a few small things you can do to reduce your risk of experiencing indigestion:
1. Be conscious of your portion sizes
With so many good options on the table, a spoonful of this and a spoonful of that can quickly lead to one big plate of food. We recommend taking a step back to consider the overall meal size or try using a smaller plate to limit serving too much food at once.
2. Consider what you’re drinking
Carbonated drinks (both soft drinks and alcoholic) can cause bloating of the stomach, which may lead to symptoms of acid reflux. Alcohol is also known to irritate the lining of the oesophagus and the gut so try pairing your meal with a lower-alcohol option.
3. Stop eating when you’re full
Despite the temptation, it is important to acknowledge when your body is telling you that you’ve had enough. Don’t fret about leaving food on your plate. If there’s a dish you are really sad to miss out on, ask to get a serve wrapped up to take home and enjoy later.
4. Eat slower
The excitement of the holiday season and having so many good food options to try means you may be eating faster than you realise. Food is enjoyed more when consumed slowly, so take your time, relax, and eat slower for a happier tummy.
As the summer heat is now out in full force, it’s important to remember to stay hydrated throughout your day. The average adult woman needs roughly 8 cups (around 2L) of water a day, whilst adult men need about 10 cups (around 2.5L) of water a day. Our bodies get one-fifth of the water we need from food and the rest from drinking fluids so especially on those warm days it’s important to keep up your water intake.
There is plenty to celebrate at this time of year, and with that, often comes plenty of drinking. Although it’s easy to get carried away, you shouldn’t be drinking more than 4 standard drinks a day and no more than 10 standard drinks a week.
A standard drink contains 10 grams of pure alcohol. It is important to note that the type of alcohol makes no difference. 10 grams of alcohol is 10 grams of alcohol whether it is in beer, wine or spirits. It doesn’t matter whether it is mixed with soft drink, fruit juice, water or ice.
Christmas time for Aussies often means plenty of time spent at the beach, or Christmas lunches spent outdoors. However, Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world with each year almost 2000 Australians die from this disease that is almost entirely preventable. Fortunately, being sun smart is an effective way to reduce the risks of developing skin cancer.
It may be hard to associate a family lunch with the need to be sun smart but it should always be on your mind anytime you intend to leave the home during daylight hours. Here’s a quick refresher on sun safety so you can enjoy your family BBQ or Boxing Day beach trip with peace of mind.
1. Apply and re-apply SPF
Sunscreen needs to be applied 20 minutes before going outdoors. Use a generous amount of sunscreen - you need at least one tablespoon per limb, one for the front of the body, one for the back of the body and one for the head. Many Australians apply too little sunscreen and often forget to reapply. You should reapply after swimming, sweating or towel drying. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, especially if you’re spending time outdoors.
2. Limit Sun Exposure
Staying in the shade is the smart way to enjoy the summer weather while limiting the risk to your skin. If you’re setting up for a day at the beach, remember to bring a tent or umbrella to create a shaded area where you can sit. Don’t spend an extended period of time in the sun. For very fair-skinned people, UV (ultraviolet) radiation can be harmful after just 10 minutes. Particularly during peak UV times in the middle of the day, try to keep out of the sun as much as possible.
2. Cover Up
Wear sun-smart clothing to protect your skin from the sun's rays. This includes:
Although the holiday season is seen as a time of joy, it can take a mental toll on a lot of people. This can sometimes come from the pressure of seeing friends and family, being overwhelmed with too many plans without leaving enough time to recharge, or feeling isolated and lonely. It can cause stress, anxiety and depression for a lot of people so during this time it’s important to be gentle, patient and kind. Here are some practical tips, you can use to possibly minimise these feelings.
The holiday season is a time to spread love and joy with those who matter to you, but that shouldn’t mean compromising our health. We hope with these quick tips you can be sure to truly relax, recharge, and celebrate this holiday season.
We again would like to wish our community at Padbury Pharmacy a happy holidays and a wonderful new year. We will be open with adjusted trading hours to support your health over this period. Pop in for a visit or give us a call on 9401 7101 if you need health support during this time.
Men generally tend to prefer to keep quiet about their struggles, especially when it comes to health concerns. They often prefer not to talk about issues that are having an impact on their daily lives, especially mental health struggles or diseases that cause them pain. A Movember study has shown us that 58% of men believe that society expects them to be strong and not show emotions and weakness in front of others.
This month, we’re striving to change that.
At Padbury Pharmacy, we believe men shouldn’t shy away from these topics. Although at times it can be difficult to open up, it is incredibly important for us to talk about it so men can feel seen, heard, and appreciated. This Movember we are working to break the stigma of men's health and bring awareness to some key cause areas including mental health, testicular cancer, and prostate cancer.
Mental health statistics show us that:
35% of men believe they’ve had a diagnosable mental health condition in their lifetime
40% of men have never spoken about their mental health struggles
29% of those who haven’t spoken about their mental health
20% say there's a negative stigma relating to men speaking out about their mental health.
Most symptoms of mental health issues are universal, the symptoms that affect men more than women include anger and irritability, working obsessively, reckless behaviour, sleep problems and substance abuse. To combat mental health issues, it is important to stay social. Spend time with good mates, and get outdoors to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. Also, try and stay active and reach out to someone you trust. You might feel alone with your mental health struggles, but you have a support system of people who love and care about you. At Padbury Pharmacy we pride ourselves on our supportive community and hope to be open door to anyone struggling.
If you have persistent symptoms, seek help from a medical professional. Your pharmacist or GP is a great place to start and will offer confidential support and referrals.
Testicular cancer occurs when abnormal cells reproduce in the testicular glands. The cancer is usually just in one testicle but can sometimes appear in both. It can also spread to other parts of the body, particularly lymph nodes and the stomach. Fortunately, testicular cancer is rare in Australia, making up roughly 1 in 100 cancers in men.
There are two types of testicular cancers: seminoma and non-seminoma. Seminoma is the most common type, while non-seminoma includes choriocarcinoma, embryonal carcinoma, teratoma and yolk sac tumours.
The most common symptom of testicular cancer is a painless lump or swelling in one or both of your testicles. Other symptoms may include: a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum, a change of size and shape of the testicle, a feeling like your testicles are uneven and aches and pains in the scrotum, testicles, stomach or back. If you experience any of these symptoms, see your doctor who will examine your testicles. If they find a lump, they may send you for an ultrasound, blood test, CT test or MRI scan.
The good news is that testicular cancer is often curable when found early, so examine your testicles regularly to make sure there are no lumps or swelling. Check yourself after a warm bath or shower (they’ve got to be steamy for this) and examine each testicle by rolling it gently between your fingers and thumb.
Anyone affected with testicular cancer will have to have it surgically removed. A lab then examines the tumour to determine what type of testicular cancer it is. After the surgery, there may not be any further treatment apart from close monitoring. For some, they may need to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
If you have to be treated for testicular cancer, it is normal to be afraid that cancer will return. If you are struggling, it is important to be open and reach out for help. Seek help from those around you, your pharmacist, doctor, a therapist or other men that have been through it as well.
Prostate cancer occurs when abnormal cells reproduce in a man's prostate gland (a gland that produces seminal fluid). It is the second most common cancer diagnosed in men in Australia. 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer before they’re 85. Early (localised) prostate cancer is cancerous cells that have grown in the prostate but appear to be nowhere else in the body. The two stages of advanced prostate cancer are:
Early prostate cancer usually doesn’t cause symptoms, but advanced prostate cancer does. These include:
It’s important to get regular checks for prostate cancer, but you’re at a higher risk of prostate cancer if you’re over the age of 50, have a family history of prostate, breast or ovarian cancer and have a father or brother diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 50.
After finding out you have prostate cancer, you may feel shocked, upset, or anxious, which is completely normal. Talk to your local pharmacist or doctor about treatment options and reach out to your loved ones if you’re having a hard time dealing with it. The people around you love and care about you and would hate it if you kept this struggle to yourself.
Men’s health, both physical and mental is rarely discussed, but that should change. At Padbury Pharmacy we hope to be a conduit for support for all members of our community, offering a place to meet, speak, and support each other. Having a conversation with a mate might help save their life. Although it may be daunting to start the conversation, you never know the impact it could have.
The hardest part can be getting the conversation started. Try asking how they are, how they’re feeling and what’s been happening lately. Using open-ended questions can work to stimulate meaningful conversations that go beyond just work, sports, or the latest tv show.
Really listening is a vital part of offering support to a friend. Create a safe space to facilitate open and honest conversations, and listen to what they have to say. Listening is more than just hearing someone so focus on their body language and speech, give your full attention, and take what’s being said seriously.
One of the hardest parts of supporting a friend through a tough time is knowing what to say. Try to encourage them to focus on the small things that could help improve how they feel, and let them know they don’t have to go through it alone. Don’t be afraid to admit when you don’t have all of the answers, and remember to discuss options for professional help and the wider network of support.
Checking in is often missed when having these important conversations so don’t forget to follow up with your friends. A follow-up can build trust in your relationship and show that you are genuinely in their corner. Some friends may be cautious to open up or welcome support, to remember to be patient, supportive and remain available for the men in your life.
This Movember Padbury Pharmacy is committed to building connections within our community and fostering an environment that nurtures honest conversations to support the men struggling in our lives. Whether it’s mental health, struggles with disease, or any other health concerns impacting their life, our door is always open for a chat. Let’s make moves this Movember to break the stigma around discussing men’s health.
]]>Spring has sprung here in Perth, and with school holidays just around the corner, it's no surprise that your little ones are excited to get outside and enjoy all the fun activities this season has to offer, and we can’t blame them! Whether you're planning on keeping the kids local or doing some family road-tripping, keep in mind that it's allergy season. Mother nature and your little one's allergies don’t wait for anyone.
One of the biggest crossovers with allergies in children is eczema (atopic dermatitis). An increase in allergies for children more often than not results in a spike in eczema. Your child’s skin may become dry, red, itchy, and bumpy. The skin's barrier function is harmed by eczema (the "glue" of your skin). The skin becomes more sensitive, prone to infection, and dry due to this lack of barrier function
The good news is that there are several things you can do to prevent it from even starting, or if not successful, reduce their symptoms, or at least make the experience more bearable for them (and you).
Blackmores Vitamins have you covered when it comes to preventing allergies and providing that additional protection this season. Here is what we recommend you take.
Blackmores Horseradish Garlic + Vitamin C Immune Support
Combinations of garlic, horseradish, and vitamin C effectively treat hay fever as they work synergistically and can be taken as a prophylactic all the way through allergy season.
Blackmores horseradish, garlic and vitamin C is a great allergy preventative as it:
Let's break it down.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine that reduces allergy reactions by preventing immune cells from releasing histamine. Vitamin C reduces allergic sensitivity and inflammation. Additionally, it lessens wheezing and mucus production in people with hay fever and associated allergies.
Horseradish
This aromatic root vegetable helps to cleanse nasal passages by acting as a decongestant. Horseradish's anti-oxidant properties have been discovered to strengthen the immune system and enhance the creation and activity of white blood cells, the body's main line of defence.
Garlic
By enhancing the immune system, garlic can aid with hay fever symptoms. It relieves nasal congestion, and its strong antibacterial qualities assist chronic hay fever sufferers to avoid secondary respiratory infections. The natural anti-histamine quercetin is also abundant in garlic. The best time to take garlic is before the hay fever season starts.
If these preventatives, unfortunately, don’t work for your little ones then don’t fret, allergies run rampant in the spring and sometimes we simply don’t win the battle. The best thing we can do now is try to eliminate a bit of their discomfort.
Antihistamine Tablets
This medication works by preventing histamine — the chemical released during an allergic reaction. Histamines cause inflammation, swelling and itching in your child’s body. Antihistamines help relieve these symptoms by blocking histamine from binding to its receptors in the body. Antihistamines tablets don't cure allergies — they only reduce symptoms such as sneezing, and itchy and irritated eyes
We recommend:
Nasal steroid sprays
We’d recommend this for children who suffer from nasal congestion during allergy season because they work by reducing inflammation in the nasal passages. This allows their nose to drain more easily, which prevents nasal drip — a thick mucus that drips down from the back of the throat and causes coughing fits and sneezing attacks.
We recommend:
Eczema Treatment
If your child’s allergies have spiked an eczema flare-up we highly recommend Moogoo products to help bring some moisture back to their skin.
Overwhelmed with the options? We recommend talking with your pharmacist for advice on choosing the best products for your little one’s needs. Our team at Padbury Pharmacy is well trained in the prevention and treatment of spring allergies, and we’re passionate about helping our family (that’s you!). From nasal sprays to antihistamines to eczema cream, we’re here to determine what kinds of treatments might be best for them based on their specific symptoms. This way, you can be sure that you’re taking the right steps towards your little one breathing a little easier — and enjoying their holidays a little more.
Don’t let allergies make your little ones miserable! We’re here to help.

In the latest episode of our Men's Health series, Steve speaks with Australian Fast Bowler legend, Mitchell Johnson, on all things health and how Mitch has balanced his transition from elite sportsman to husband and father. Mitch opens up about his own mental health struggles and experiences, both while playing cricket for Australia, and in the years since his retirement.
"It's been an up and down road. It hasn't been easy at times. I've found out about myself a lot. I've got ADHD and suffered some depression as well."
Our goal throughout this entire campaign is to give you the tools to start your own conversations, and bring to you the real life experiences of the men in our community. "We just, as men, wait for something to go wrong." It's time to rewrite these narratives, and recognise that prevention really is better than the cure. Regular check ups, and checks in's with yourself and others, are they key. So whatever that first step may be, we encourage you to take it, and Padbury Pharmacy will be here to help along the way.

]]>In the first of our Men's Health series, Steve speaks with his brother, Chris Litas, on all things health and how Chris balances being a loving husband, dedicated father and busy business owner.
With Chris and his team at Litas Mainstone having experienced firsthand the life changing impacts that poor mental health can have on a young man's life, it has become so vitally important to Chris and his team to open up about the topics which are so typically taboo for men.
Our goal throughout this entire campaign is to give you the tools to start your own conversations, and bring to you the real life experiences of the men in our community.

]]>Amidst the global health crisis we find ourselves in, we want to reassure our community that our quality of care will not subside. As the Australian Government’s restrictions change by the hour and by the day, we want you to rest assured that our commitment to you won’t waver. Any which way we can, we will continue to update our processes and implement safe strategies to offer our community the support and reliable healthcare needed.
At Padbury Pharmacy, we are lucky enough to be backed by friendly, empathetic and supportive health care professionals and staff members. As a team, we are committed to making sure our valued customers receive scripts and repeats when required, as well as continual access to all of our other services — and all with a smile! This extends beyond our doors too, with trusted healthcare professionals such as doctors and nurses in our local community working in collaboration with Padbury Pharmacy, in any way possible.
All that we ask in return is for our lovely customers to return the smile and adhere to the Government’s restrictions and recommendations, so that we can continue providing optimal support day in day out.
If any of these apply to you, please remain at home and refrain from coming in store:
If you find you fall into any of these groups, never fear! Padbury Pharmacy can still offer you support via phone or email, and our team can arrange to have scripts and supplies delivered to your door if need be.
In store, we have put in place preventative measures in an effort to halt the spread throughout the wider community and help ensure the health and safety of everyone who steps foot inside. Customers can rest assured our surfaces are cleaned hourly, hand santiser is used frequently, and our team continues to practice and promote spatial distancing of at least two metres between everyone in store.
In an attempt to limit physical contact where we can, contactless payments are requested where possible. In the interest of keeping our team safe and healthy, we ask that you adapt to cashless payments if you are able. Whether this be via you card, phone apps or even smart watches and rings, the less cash handled, the better. We understand that this is not achievable by all members of our community, and we will still gladly (and safely) accept cash from those who need to use it.
We also offer a new service that allows our customers to have your prescriptions filled in a way that is seamless, contactless and with limited exposure. The app, MedAdvisor, available on any device which can be used to access the internet (including your desktop computer), offers a convenient way to track, manage and pay for medications and scripts.
By selecting Padbury Pharmacy as your preferred pharmacy upon registration, the MedAdvisor app allows you to receive SMS, email and voice reminders about when you are due to make an order, while prompting our team in store to fill your script. When it’s ready, we’ll let you know it’s time to come pick it up!
Pay In Advance, a recent feature of the app, also allows customers to pre-pay for your medications from the safety and comfort of your home, making the transaction in store as quick and contactless as possible. You are also able to use the app to communicate directly with our team in store, who can arrange our home delivery service for you if you are unable to leave home to collect your medications.
In the coming days and weeks, we will introduce more systems and processes which will make things continually more accessible (and easier) for our community. We will continue to work in collaboration with our fellow health care professionals in Padbury and surrounding areas, to bring you the tailored and reliable service you have come to know and love from the team at Padbury Pharmacy.
If you’ve visited our social media platforms lately (Facebook and Instagram), you will know that Steve has continued to highlight the importance between spatial and social distancing. Spatial distancing is one of our most powerful tools to fighting COVID-19, and we should always ensure we are following government regulated spatial distancing rules. We encourage you to STAY HOME, and truly only leave the house if it is essential to your health and wellbeing to do so.
Socially, however, it is more important than ever to remain connected and emotionally close to those around us. We are lucky to live in an age where our devices can connect us to people all around the world in an instant. Social media can bring communities of people together, even if they’ve never met before. To maintain positive mental and social health, we encourage you to use these platforms to your best ability to engage and connect with others that you are unable to physically see. Reach out to older or vulnerable members of your family and friends via Skype or FaceTime, and set regular check ins with them to make sure they are keeping well. Apps like TikTok and HouseParty not only give our kids something to entertain themselves with (learning those dances isn’t easy), but it provides a platform for us to connect with others both locally and globally, allowing us to maintain social interaction and a positive outlook on life.
There are also countless meditation and mental health resources, apps and podcasts which you can access to help you through the current times. One of our personal favourites, Headspace, is offering free meditation and mindfulness resources for the current crisis, and you can find access to these here.
If you feel like you need to speak with someone private and in confidentiality, we encourage you to reach out to the below resources and groups.

If you are in any doubt about symptoms, or need a bit of reassurance, the Department of Health offers a free Coronavirus symptom checker to help you determine your symptoms and what to do next. Further, you can stay up to date with the latest Coronavirus news and advice through the Australia Government website.
Individually and together as a community, let’s do our bit to help flatten the curve amid this global health crisis, by following restrictions, washing our hands, and supporting each other more than we ever have before!
We are all in this together. Stay safe and keep smiling.

]]>Padbury Pharmacy owner and pharmacist, Steve Litas, was contacted by Bec just shy of Christmas last year, reaching out with an outlandish decree- Bec was going to swim 85,000 metres in a bid to raise $85,000 for the Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre, located in Stirling.
Inspired by her might and dedication in the face of living with her own Type 1 daily struggles, Steve and Bec formed a dynamic duo. After learning more about Bec’s mission, Steve helped to kick it off with a $2.5K donation on behalf of Padbury Pharmacy and Alex Junior.
What’s more inspirational about this feat is that Bec is also living with Type 1 Diabetes, and has to manage her condition daily to ensure her health and wellbeing, in both training and daily life. Since her diagnosis at age 17, Bec has learnt discipline, adaptability and mental resilience, and wants to use this campaign as a way to show others living with T1 that there are no limits to what you can achieve. It’s also a way to share her own management tools and techniques, with Bec sharing her daily training routine, low-carb diet and experience of training with daily insulin injections.
Enter Steve; a passionate supporter of community initiatives, a sufferer of a chronic health disease himself, and the son of a passionate Rottnest Channel swim veteran (shout out to Alex Senior)! When Steve heard about Bec’s Life Without Limits campaign, there was no question about Padbury’s Pharmacy’s involvement, the question was how big can we go!
If you’ve visited the pharmacy lately you would have noticed our (not so) subtle nod to Bec’s campaign above our counters. We’ve hung it with pride and encourage our customers to ask us more about Bec and the Life Without Limits campaign!
We also have various ways in which you can donate towards Bec’s goal. If you’re in store you can pop your cash donations in one of our donation tins on our front counter. If you’re paying via card, just ask your friendly pharmacist to add a donation amount of choice to your purchase and we’ll add it to the tally! If you can’t make it in store to donate, you can also jump on the Life Without Limits website and directly donate via the link on the homepage.
But of course, this isn’t just about Bec! This is only a stepping stone in our goal to becoming your preferred Type 1 destination for all questions and queries regarding lifestyle, management and products. With the support of Bec and the Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre, our team are in the process of sharpening up our skills and understanding, and are here to help you with anything you may need to know about T1. Should you need further assistance, we’re happy to put you in contact with our friends at the centre, or can even follow up all of your T1 questions and get back to you. Did you know that Padbury Pharmacy is also one of a limited number of registered NDSS outlets across Perth, allowing us to help service your T1 product requirements.
Having recognised a strong lack of accessible support and services for those living with and impacted by T1, especially in our northern suburbs, Steve and the team at Padbury Pharmacy are proud to collaborate with the Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre, and to welcome our T1 community in store. We encourage you to reach out to us to see how we can help you to find your better.
Stay tuned for more updates throughout March and April as Bec tackles her final two swims; the Port to Pub and the double crossing. Plus, check out our in store display, resources and donations tracker- we’d love to hear what you think!
If you or someone you know is living with Type 1 Diabetes and has any contributions, ideas or feedback, please don’t hesitate to visit us in store or send us a message online. Support from the local community is what truly makes Padbury Pharmacy special, and allows us to continue supporting those who need it.
]]>My surgery, 2019.
Now 12 months on from not only our campaign, but my diagnosis, it is my pleasure to welcome you all to February 2020, and to continue the vital conversations and knowledge sharing that is needed to help improve the heart health of our fellow Australians.
Heart disease is the single leading cause of death in Australia, killing one of us every 30 minutes. Luckily, prevention really is the best medicine, and our aim at Padbury Pharmacy, this and every month, is to continue to share with you the best health, care and advice, and the ways in which you can support your own heart and prevent long term damage and disease.
Cardiologist, Dr Edward Barin, has created the 4M approach to heart health, laying out four simple steps which we can all aim to incorporate in our daily lives to support living with a healthy heart.
Move. It’s recommended we get ourselves up and physically active for a minimum of 30 minutes each day. Exercise and being physically active can have so many benefits for your health and well being, and allows us to manage one of the many factors of heart disease; being overweight or obese. I personally love a game of midweek soccer! Social sports are a great way to get a weekly dose of high intensity activity plus they support a healthy mind, keeping you social and mentally refreshed in the company of your teammates.
Since my diagnosis last year, I have also incorporated weekly gym sessions with my Personal Trainer and have a newfound appreciation for Pilates, each offering different results and levels of challenges.
If joining classes or gyms is not within your time or budget limitations, one of the simplest ways to keep a happy heart is WALKING! It can be done anywhere, at anytime, and 30 minutes of walking per day can help to manage weight gain and keeps the blood pumping through the all important muscle, the heart. The Australia Heart Foundation has a fantastic walking initiative which allows you to register as a solo walker or find a walking group near you for some extra inspiration! Hit the link here to find your closest walking group and register now.
Meals. Being smart with our diets is always going to work in our heart’s favour. By dieting, I don’t mean short term fads and phases for weight loss. Your heart is with you for the long term and so should your healthy eating habits. Educating yourself on the right types of foods for your body is key. Consistency in a balanced diet, when paired with regular exercise, can help to eliminate numerous risk factors for heart disease. I have always considered myself a relatively healthy eater, but since my diagnosis last year I took the steps to consult health professionals such as my GP and PT on the best options for a healthy daily diet. Even your friendly Padury Pharmacists are able to offer you educated diet advice, so head in store if you’d like to know more.
Measurements. A simple and consistent tracker of your body measurements is a great way to manage and recognise when something is either working well, or cause for concern. Keeping track of things like weight, cholesterol and blood pressure can help to optimise the way your heart health is checked and treated. At Padbury Pharmacy we are able to undertake free blood pressure checks in store, with no appointment needed! I encourage you all to make this a priority this month, and even more, a goal for 2020; monthly blood pressure checks.
Mental Approach. Studies show that factors like stress, anger and depression can have a negative impact on our hearts, so identifying triggers and techniques to manage these are key to a healthy heart for life. As a father of two, running a business full time and juggling a heart disease myself, I understand that ‘managing stress’ is easier said than done. However, take the time to find the things that work for you, whether that be a yoga class, some simple meditation, a walk in nature, or a weekend away, and remind yourself to use these tools when your body and mind endures stress and anxiety.
After an extremely busy Christmas and New Year period, both personally and at Padbury Pharmacy, I recognised the need for some down time with my wife and kids. We took a small trip down south for 5 refreshing days of sunshine, swimming and quality togetherness, and on our return I found my mental state to be better than ever.
Speaking of the Pharmacy, February is a big month for us and I am so pleased to share with you a little insight into what you can expect to see.
Just as we turned pink for Breast Cancer, we will be turning red for Heart Health! Both in store and online we are actively using the red to help start the important conversations around our heart health, and to generate awareness for Heart Research Month.
On Friday, February 14th we will be Wearing Red for Heart Research! Last year’s Wear Red Day was a huge success so we are bringing it back this year and encourage not only our staff, but our customers to join in too.
In store our focus is very much on the products and services we can offer you to assist in your own heart health journey. We have teamed up with Blackmores to highlight some of the products which you can incorporate into your daily life to better your own heart health and we encourage you to head in store and speak to our team about which ones could work for you. Some of my preferred products include:
Blackmores Natural E 1000IU. This capsule contains antioxidant Vitamin E and free radical scavenger, which helps to protect your cells from free radical damage, otherwise known as unstable atoms in your body which can cause illness and aging. The natural Vitamin E present is also more easily absorbed than synthetic, and can help to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.
Blackmores SuperStrength CoQ10 300mg. This soft capsule contains a potent dose of coenzyme Q10, an antioxidant enzyme that is found naturally concentrated in the heart muscle. CoQ10 300mg helps to maintain your cardiovascular health and function, enhances blood vessel health and helps to maintain healthy blood lipids.
Blackmores Omega Triple Super Strength Fish Oil. This capsule, when taken daily, offers a great source of naturally derived omega-3’s, offering triple the omega-3’s than standard fish oil tablets. Omega-3’s are essential for regular health and can assist with maintaining heart, skin, eye and brain health, as well as having an anti-inflammatory effect, helping to relieve symptoms of mild joint arthritis.
I also recommend the use of Enliva, a daily natural supplement to support your cholesterol health. Enliva works with good bacteria which help to break down bile salts made from cholesterol in your body. Enzymes from the bacteria in Enliva help with the breakdown of internal bile salts and can assist people in keeping their cholesterol within the regular range.
My team of specialised pharmacists and I would be happy to speak with you regarding the products which could work for you. Why not also take advantage of our FREE in store Meds Checks, where one of our team members can conduct a review of your current medications to ensure your prescriptions and complementary products are not negatively interacting with one another, and ultimately compromising your health.
Last but not least, what would Padbury Pharmacy be without having a little prize up for grabs? To support our continued goal of getting the community up and moving, and continuing to focus the conversation on living healthy, this month we are giving away a FitBit! The conditions of entry are simple; just share your healthy heart approach with us on any of our social media channels to get yourself in the draw! We’re talking about your gym selfies, your post run tomato face selfies, a screenshot of your daily steps tracker at the end of a busy day, a video while you’re on a walk, or basically ANY WAY you can think to share your activity with us. Tag, post or mention us on your social media platforms to go in the draw!
My team is as excited as ever to be a part of this campaign on a topic that is really so close to our hearts. If you have any questions or wish to discuss your own heart health this, or any, month, please visit us in store at Padbury Pharmacy and let’s have a chat!
Thanks, Steve.
]]>The McGrath Foundation was born, with the aim of ensuring every family experiencing breast cancer would have access to a breast care nurse for free. Money raised at the annual Domain Pink Test — where fellow Aussies come together to enjoy the cricket and dig deep to fundraise for a fantastic cause — would be used to fund these breast care nurses.
“Through my experience with breast cancer, the mission for the McGrath Foundation became clear: to raise money to place breast care nurses in communities across Australia, as well as increase breast awareness in young people, particularly young women. Together, we can make a difference.”
At Padbury Pharmacy, we cannot agree more. That’s why this January, and for the rest of the year, we’ve dedicated our time and effort to raising awareness for breast cancer and continuing the important conversation around this debilitating disease — one that resulted in the diagnosis of 19,371 females and 164 males, an average of 53 people per day, in 2019.
Steve knows the importance of using Padbury Pharmacy and Alex Junior’s platforms, both in store and online, to help the cause, saying “conversation is important, and it gets awareness out there. It really encourages people to take notice”
From the beginning of 2020, you may have noticed something different about Padbury Pharmacy. To kick off the campaign and show our support for breast cancer awareness, the McGrath Foundation and the Domain Pink Test, we turned PINK!
“Pink month was very much breast cancer awareness and focused in and around and in alignment with Jane McGrath and The McGrath Foundation. It tied in really well- I am obviously a lover of cricket and it gave us a great excuse to tune into the test match in store for the time it was on.”
Both in store and across our social channels, Padbury Pharmacy’s usual blue was replaced with the McGrath Foundation pink in solidarity. Even our staff donned pink on January 3rd — the second day of the Domain Pink Test which saw $1.2 million raised! We also sold Cancer Council pink ribbons and fundraised in store — our small contribution to such a worthy cause.
“We managed to transform overnight into pink, which was a fantastic conversation starter and gave us a fantastic opportunity to engage in really good and honest conversations with our customers and staff at both Padbury Pharmacy and Alex Junior.”
Although January is wrapping up, by no means is our support for breast cancer awareness. Breast cancer is the single most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in Australian women. From that statistic alone, it’s clear how important it is to receive regular breast screens and stay on top of your health. For Padbury locals, the closest place to get checked is BreastScreen WA in Hepburn Heights Shopping Centre.
We urge anyone going through breast cancer, whether experiencing it yourself or by the side of a loved one, if you need a shoulder to lean on or someone to talk to, please visit us in store. At Padbury Pharmacy, we do our best to put our community first and support our friends and family in all aspects of life.
Back in August, we celebrated all things ‘Dadbury’ in the lead up to Father’s Day, on Sunday September 1st. Teaming up with our best friends at AJ, we gave away the most epic Father’s Day prize to a deserving Padbury dad. The concept was simple, jump onto our socials (Facebook and Instagram) and tell us about the special father figure in your life. We had so many beautiful entries, which made it very clear that the dads of Padbury are SO loved! As for the prize, Steve so generously gifted up his framed and signed Mitchell Johnson poster, which was taken out of retirement from the man cave for this very special occassion.
In the end, the prize was gifted to Taryn (pictured above) who had entered on behalf of her husband, who she said had provided incredible support and strength while enduring the loss of their 10 month old baby, 3 years back.
We so often focus on the mums of Padbury (and why wouldn’t we, they rock!) but as father’s themselves, it was as important as ever to Steve and Kieran to recognise the role of fathers too. This is a focus we will continue into 2020, and you’ve only seen the beginning of Dadbury!
The end of September saw us coming down with a serious case of footy fever, verdict: incurable! Even though our cherished West Coast Eagles caused mass heartbreak when they narrowly missed out on playing a back-to-back Grand Final, we still had some fun in store, giving customers a chance to lucky draw a top 6 finalist to take them through to the win! A lucky handful who selected the Richmond Tigers were treated to a free coffee at AJ to celebrate the win (or cure the GF hangover…).
October saw all things Telethon hit the store, with fundraising in full swing for the annual Telethon weekend over October 26th and 27th. We kicked things off with Alex Juniors 2nd Birthday where everyone came together and had a ‘circus’ of a time with face painting, balloon twisting and of course lots of coffee, and cakes which were generously donated by our local suppliers. The day was a smashing success, and all proceeds raised from coffee and food sales on the day went towards our total Telethon donation.
Raising his two young sons, Alex and Hugo, alongside supportive wife Simone, Steve holds a special place in his heart for Telethon. Telethon weekend was the perfect time for Steve and Simone to teach the boys about gratitude and appreciation for their own good health. Once again we were blown away by the generosity, love and support from the Padbury community. The Litas family was honoured to be asked to present a donation on behalf of Padbury Pharmacy and Alex Junior ON AIR over the Telethon weekend, and if you were watching at 8.45am on Sunday morning, you may just have caught Steve and (the real) Alex Junior presenting a grand total of $4,424!
A massive shoutout must go to the wonderful local businesses and suppliers who gave donations when we reached out. We also want to thank our fantastic and loyal customers who gave generously in our gold coin donation buckets that we had in store throughout October. We couldn’t have done it without you all and we’re already planning something bigger and better for 2020.
What ELSE did we get up to in October we hear you ask? Well, we launched a new product range into the pharmacy by the name of MooGoo and we UDDERLY love it… See what we did there? MooGoo are an eco friendly, Australian owned company that offers a range of natural, safe products with ingredients that are designed for people with skin and scalp problems. Click here to read about the Top 3 products our customers have been loving in store lately.

]]>Throwing it back to March, Steve and Kieran (of Alex Junior) took part in the World’s Greatest Shave, raising money for The Leukaemia Foundation. The boys set their sights on a $5,000 goal and with the incredible generosity of the Padbury community, came through with a total of $5,022! On the morning of Friday, March 15th, fearless leaders Steve and Kieran, along with our lovely volunteer hairdressers, parked themselves up outside the two stores and got ready to say goodbye to their luscious locks. We had a great turnout from locals and supporters, and even the infamous Alex Snr made an appearance!
The cause was particularly special to Steve, who shared with the crowd that his own uncle was currently undergoing treatment for Leukaemia. To be able to partake in such a fun and good-spirited event, all in the name of fundraising, was quite the experience for the boys, and it couldn’t have been done without the support of the community.
We hit the ground running in April, with both Easter and ANZAC Day fast approaching. You may have noticed our subtle tribute to past and present Australian veterans with our poppy display. As a pharmacy, we have many Veteran customers who are special to us. In the midst of the Easter excitement, we liked to remind ourselves to stop and take a moment between chocolate eggs to acknowledge the sacrifice that these customers, and all other Veterans made for us.
But of course, how could we forget the egg-citement of the big day. The pharmacy was a buzz with activity this Easter, from kids colouring competitions, to guess the eggs, and even a chance to crack a traditional red egg with Steve for Orthodox Easter. We had some fantastic prize winners, and the works of our future Padbury Picasso’s were displayed proudly for all to see.
May gifted us Mother’s Day, and in case you hadn’t noticed, mums are quite important to us at Padbury Pharmacy. We decided that the mums of Padbury deserve way more than just one day a year, so we turned Mother’s Day into Mother’s Week! We teamed up with Alex Junior to give away a prize a day via our Instagram pages to the mamas who entered in the comments and boy did we have some entries! About 1,279 entries to be exact…
A huge shout out goes to the wonderful local businesses around Padbury who were willing to jump on board with us; Padbury Nails and Beauty, Padbury Florist, Alex Junior Espresso, R’Nay Clothing, and of course the latest addition to our retail space, Café Collective.
Speaking of, if you haven’t explored our new retail space yet, we encourage you to. May also saw the beginning of a beautiful friendship with local business and bespoke gift retailer, Café Collective. Owner Heidi sources some of WA’s most delightful and unique hand-crafted gifts and pieces, bringing them together in our retail space and spoiling us for choice. Trust us that this came in particularly handy for last minute Mother’s Day presents!

What did July gift us with? Well, for the second year in a row, Steve took part in Dry July, with a personal fundraising goal of $500… which he totally knocked out of the park! Steve finished up July with a total $682.95 raised in the name of cancer based research and support. From the Cancer Council Australia, to the Leukaemia Foundation, Look Good Feel Better, the McGrath Foundation, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, Redkite and more, the money is distributed to those who really need it most, making each dollar even more special. And even though July is well and truly behind us, you can still donate by clicking the link here.
Did you participate in Dry July this year too? Why not stop by the pharmacy and share your experience with Steve and the team! If you loved the added health benefits of going alcohol free, speak to our team about which daily products you can incorporate into your healthy living routine to keep the feeling going.
In the theme of new things, you may have noticed that you’re reading this on our new website. We’ve reworked the site to make it even easier to order online, for purchases like Dr Brown’s baby products, and everything complimentary a new parent could need!
