Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — an international initiative that serves as a reminder that supporting your health is an ongoing journey. This month, we pause to not only reflect on the millions of lives affected by breast cancer, but also to listen to our bodies and reach out when something doesn’t feel right.

This is the perfect time to talk about caring for ourselves inside and out, from daily routines to recognising the signs that something needs more attention.

At Padbury Pharmacy, we aim to help you find your better and say yes to you, not just for a day or a month, but across every season.

Know the Signals: What to Look For & When to Act

Understanding your body and recognising early warning signs is one of the most powerful ways to protect your health. While factors like age, family history, and lifestyle can all influence your risk of developing breast cancer, being aware and proactive makes all the difference.

Pay attention to changes.
Notice if something feels different, such as a lump, thickening in breast tissue, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or unusual discharge. These small signs might seem minor, but they’re your body’s way of asking for attention. Trust your instincts and don’t ignore what feels new or unusual.

Make self-checks part of your routine.
Once a month, take a few minutes to gently feel your breasts using the pads of your fingers, ideally a few days after your period when tissue is least tender. You’re looking for anything that feels new, firm, or different between sides. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s familiarity. The more you know your normal, the quicker you’ll notice a change.

Don’t let fear or uncertainty delay you.
If something doesn’t feel right, don’t wait. Speak to your GP or a women’s health specialist for professional advice and peace of mind.

Free Breast Screening Services in WA
In Western Australia, BreastScreen WA offers free mammograms every two years for women aged 40–74. Regular screening is one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early, even before symptoms appear.

  • You can book online at breastscreen.health.wa.gov.au or call 13 20 50.

  • There are fixed clinics throughout Perth and mobile screening units that visit regional and remote areas.
If you’re under 40, over 74, or have a family history of breast cancer, talk to your GP about a screening plan tailored to your needs.

We’re Here to Support You

Your Padbury Pharmacy team is always here to listen, guide you through what screening involves, and connect you with the right care options. Your wellbeing is our priority, and we’re here to help you take each step with confidence.

Support, Share & Strengthen Together

Health is rarely a solo journey. Sharing your story, seeking support, and leaning on your community all play a powerful role in healing and prevention.

Lean on your support network.
Allow the people who care about you to help, whether that’s discussing being proactive about breast checks, regular catch-ups, or simply listening when you need it most.

Connect with trusted organisations.
There are many resources available to support women through every stage of breast health and recovery:

  • National Breast Cancer Foundation (nbcf.org.au) – research, resources, and fundraising events

  • Breast Cancer Care WA (breastcancer.org.au) – free counselling, financial and practical support for people affected by breast cancer

  • Cancer Council WA (cancerwa.asn.au) – information, helpline, and local support groups

Talk to your pharmacy team.
At Padbury Pharmacy, we’re more than a dispensary, we’re part of your health support circle. Whether you’d like advice about supplements, managing side effects, hormone therapy, or general wellbeing, our pharmacists are here to listen and guide you with compassion and understanding.

Raise awareness in your own way.
Making a difference doesn’t always mean big gestures. A quiet conversation with a friend, a supportive message online, or volunteering locally all contribute to raising awareness and strengthening the community around you.

When women support women, the ripple is powerful. Encouragement inspires confidence, conversations spark awareness, and shared stories can save lives.

A Season to Prioritise You

This October, let’s think of Breast Cancer Awareness Month not only as a call for awareness but as a gentle reminder to prioritise your wellbeing, in every way.

Breast health is just one part of the picture. Nutrition, movement, rest, stress management, and social connection all play a role in keeping your body and mind strong.

If you’re ever unsure, worried, or simply curious about your health, come in and chat with our friendly pharmacists. We’ll help you find clarity, share resources, and support you one small step at a time.
