Steve goes Dry for July!
As you may have seen across our social media platforms, this July our fearless leader Steve Litas has decided to participate in Dry July!
It’s a phrase you may have heard in the past, especially by that mate who always talks about the latest health kick they’re embarking on, only to end the week with a bottle of red wine and a cheese platter. But we assure you, Steve’s challenge is no joke.
As a campaign, Dry July is all about raising money and support for our fellow Australians suffering from and affected by cancer. The funds raised are shared across multiple cancer support organisations which help improve patient comfort, care and wellbeing (Dry July Foundation).
The whole idea began in 2008 when Chris Brown was topping the music charts and our favourite New York pals were back on the big screen for the Sex and the City movie. And while pop culture was blossoming, three Australian mates named Brett, Kenny and Phil were coining the now iconic phrase Dry July in a pact to take a break from alcohol for the month. They decided to use the occasion to raise money for a cancer-affected family member and asked other to raise funds to support them.
The initial goal in 2008 was to raise $3,000. The boys and their supporters hit a massive $250,000 and hence Dry July was conceived!
Steve now becomes one of the more than 130,000 fellow Australians who has taken part in the cause in the last 10 years, with every dollar raised considerably helping over 75 Australian cancer organisations.
As a local pharmacist who has served the Padbury community for over 20 years, Steve has seen and felt first-hand the effects that cancer can have on patients and their families. It’s a cause he is passionate to get behind and hopes that one day we can eliminate this horrible disease altogether, and he can get back to enjoying a red wine on a stormy July winter’s night.
But between now and the day that Dry July is needed no more, there is a lot of work to be done. Our community can’t begin to help fight the battle without the support and donations of our members. So please, let’s help Steve hit his $10,000 goal this year!
You can click here to find Steve’s Dry July page where you can make a donation online. Alternatively, you can pop into the pharmacy and donate in store. Our friendly pharmacists will be able to help, so just ask them! If all you have is a little money, and a lot of passion for the cause, that’s perfect. Every little bit counts and your support does not go unnoticed.
